Ads Did Not Grow In 2007 But Internet Advertising Soared 15.9% to $11.3 Billion

NEW YORK Advertising expenditures barely grew in 2007 up 0.2% to $148 billion compared to 2006 spending, according to TNS Media Intelligence. In Q4 advertising expenditures were virtually flat, falling 0.1%.

"The ad market remains stalled and is being engulfed by the spreading pessimism about general economic conditions," Jon Swallen, senior vice president of research at TNS Media Intelligence, said in a statement. "Fourth quarter performance was indicative of this malaise and early figures from 2008 suggest the growth rate for measured ad spending has not appreciably changed."

Spending at newspapers fell 5.6% to $26.3 billion in 2007. Advertising on Spot TV drooped 10.2% to $15.5 billion during 2007. Internet advertising soared 15.9% to $11.3 billion last year. Spending at local radio stations declined 2.7% to $7.1 billion for the same period.

Social Network Sites Do Not See Our Ads

The vast swaths of people at social networking sites are not ad friendly? Yes according to a post on bokardo. It also goes further to say that Google made a lot of money on Search advertising but the earnings has been low with advertising at MySpace and facebook. It is argued that people come to Search engines to search for some thing and that is why ads work so well. The contextual pointing of resources for what people are searching may get more clicks. Yes I agree but I also thing people come to MySpace and facebook searching for something. Perhaps those are personal and hard to make a subject of contextual Advertisement? I guess if you apply the same algorithm to both it might not work. Perhaps Google Advertising need to learn more social skills? Go get personal.

There’s been lots of talk recently about the ineffectiveness of advertisements in social media properties like MySpace and Facebook. During their recent quarterly earnings results, Google explained that they are not making as much money from ads on social network sites as they had predicted. Even though this was a blip on an otherwise stellar quarter, Google’s stock took a serious beating.

Why is this so? Why is it that Google monetizes so well on Search while having a hard time on social properties? Given an equal amount of views on Google vs. MySpace, shouldn’t they be able to get about the same number of click-throughs and thus ad revenue?

Google Video Advertising With AdSense For Video(Beta)

Google has launched the AdSense for Video beta. I hope it will be successful like the other AdSense programs. I wonder if these ads will be intrusive like regular TV ads and since being online, will I be able to skip the ad if I do not like it? Perhaps they will be like super bowl ads that we want to see! There are many unknowns and only time will tell.

If you are interested in publishing video ads, you can apply through Google Video Advertising Solutions (Watch the video above). The publisher section is only made available to invite publishers who meet the following minimum requirements:
Use Flash player 7.0 or above
Viewership primarily based in the United States, English language
At least one million monthly video views

TrialPay, A Referel Service That Actually Pays! Someone And Gives Products Free!

I came across NY Times article about TrialPay. It is a new marketing method that relies on a web of business relationships to give consumers free goods, as long as they buy something else from a long list of well-known online stores.

TrialPay has recently gained a following among online businesses and investors. Now that the idea is attracting more well-known retailers, analysts said, consumers could see more free offers in the coming months.
“This is a very strange, unique animal, but I could see where it would work,” said Dana Gould, an analyst with Financial Insights, a consultant group based in Framingham, Mass. “And since these offers come at exit points, companies are basically saving lost sales.”

Stopzilla, which sells computer security software for around $40, already offers 15-day free trials for prospective customers. After the trial period, those who go to the site to uninstall the program are shown a pop-up window asking if they would like to receive the product free.
They are then shown a list of companies, including Blockbuster, GameFly and Citi, that have agreed to subsidize the cost of the Stopzilla purchase if the customer agrees to also sign up with them.

If they agree, customers are taken, at that point, to a Web site like Blockbuster or Gap, and when they complete their purchase they are sent a code by e-mail for redeeming their free item. Sometimes, these merchants and other TrialPay advertisers, like Gap and Stamps.com, will sweeten the deal with discounts of their own.
