The European Commision Puts Google on Spotlight For AdSense's Panda 4.0 Algorithm and Other Changes

Related image
Google has been on EU's cross hairs for last one and half years and so far has been fined a total 6.76 billion euros ($7.7 billion) for favoring its comparison shopping service and for leveraging Google's own Android mobile operating system to further its search engine market power.

Now the European Commission is wrapping up a third case which involves Google’s AdSense advertising service. This case was brought about by a complaint by U.S. search and advertising company Yelp (YELP.N) and other competitors in travel, restaurant and accommodation industries.

EU authority sent questionnaires to Google competitors last month, requesting information on the Google’s practices and the impact on their services between January 2012 to December 2017. The focus is on the

search algorithm changes introduced by Google, including the introduction of its Panda 4.0 algorithm. Also among the questions were, if Google’s introduction of the Local Universal or One Box had a substantial impact on their local search services. Local Universal handles hotel ads and One Box is a tool for local businesses to get more visibility in Google search results.

AdSense Optimization Checklist, Part 1

Your optimization checklist, Part 1 - Inside AdSense

Looks like AdSense wants you to straighten up your AdSense activities and stratergies to maximize your earning potential. Since this blog has been dormant for a while, we thought it is time we got our act together and what is more better than directing our readers to a fantastic resource with the first article in the new year.
Inside AdSense will be publishing the AdSense Optimization Checklist in two parts and devoting the first post / part to check items that you may have already attended to and to remind good old AdSense tips.

One of the tasks is to take care of Ad Coverage on your site. You already know that you can have three standard AdSense for Content units on your site. But the 300x600 are limited to only one. You can have three link units and two AdSense for Search boxes. If you are not sure of the process or wondering if and how to place Ad units, the Video below might help.
This is followed by explanation on User recommended Ad sizes, Show both text and image ads, Experimenting with Ad Colors, Optimal Ad placement and adding a AdSense for Search boxes. There are  ample resource links within the post to make the task even easier, like one of our favorites, Heat Map for Pages.
Reading the article reminded me to take care of a few things about this site, starting with entirely new layout to make it more presentable and easily readable to our readers.

Does The Ad Size Matter? Looks Like Wider The Better

I was browsing through Adsense Help pages and noticed a page devoted to ad sizes. There I learned some thing that I did not think of before, Ad orientation. According the AdSense, wider ad sizes tend to outperform their taller counterparts, simply because of their eye-friendly or reader-friendly format. When we read or glance at some thing, we absorb information in "thought units," several words at a time in the case which contains text. So wide ads let us comfortably read more text at a glance without having to bounce between lines like in a vertical ad or a narrower ad.

With their knowledge in ad space, AdSense team has this suggestion;
If positioned well, wide ad sizes can increase your earnings significantly. The sizes we've found to be the most effective are the 336x280 Large Rectangle, the 300x250 Medium Rectangle, and the 160x600 Wide Skyscraper. Keep in mind that while these ad sizes typically perform well, you should use the size that best complements your pages.
Following video explain the fact;
So why don't you try with your website. If you are not a AdSense member, you can signup at Google Publisher solutions.

April Fool Comes Too early to Techcrunch, Bashes Mattcutts, Webspam, Adsense

Matt Cutts is battling Merissa Mayer and Nikesh Arora for spam and Google revenue. There were even talks of a $40 Million Yacht named "The Adsense". But most telling is what Matt Cutts have said!
"Cutts refused to comment specifically on this story, although he did say in an email exchange that Google absolutely does not use humans in determining search results and that the algorithms make ranking decisions based on a proprietary blend of a variety of signals, such as how much revenue Google generates from the results."

AdSense eCPM (effective cost per thousand impressions): Explained

effective Cost for Per thousand iMpressions, sounds pretty technical but in simple words, it is the amount of revenue one can expect to earn from AdSense, per every 1000 impressions shown on one's site.
eCPM could be helpful in many ways to a site owner or a publisher. it is a fine example of how your site and advertisements on it are performing. ( If you were looking for eCPM on your AdSense control panel, you will not find it. But what you will find is the RPM, Revenue Per thousand iMpressions, which means the same as eCPM.)
On the control panel, one could check performance data, broken down in periods and you will see the RPM based on those period. day, yesterday, last 7 days, last 30 days and so on. Longer the period, more accurate the data will.be.
Now that we know what it is, the obvious next question is "what are the factors that govern the eCPM? and another sure fire question, "what could one do to improve and earn a high eCPM?"
But the good people of AdSense have come to our aid and have kicked off a two part video series to explain and inform all about AdSense eCPM.
The first part of the series, AdSense Manager, Matthew Carpenter Arevalo introduce us to the basics of how eCPM is calculated and explain how to analyze the causes behind any changes in your eCPM.

There is more information on eCPM at the help center as well.

You can now run detailed performance reports by ad type, ad size, ad unit, targeting type, and bid type for total earnings and other metrics, over a custom date range. You can also drill down into those reports to view new reports for just one or multiple elements, like channels, ad units, or products.

If you are a busy person, you will appreciate the greater efficiency provided by the new interface which include;

When Is A picture Not Worth A Thousand Words? When Crawlers Come Looking For Content!

Sometimes we tend to use pictures and photos to describe something that we are trying to express to the world. We take in the old saying that a picture is worth thousand words. But the old adage does not seem to fit in with todays world, specially when it come to the Internet world. Specially when it comes to the search and advertising crawlers and your web site content. Most web crawlers are not capable of reading picture nor words in the pictures. So always use alternate text with your pictures. To improve your ad targeting, here are few other pointers given by AdSense Blog:
  • Use text in addition to images when possible. Please note that the crawler can't read text contained within images.
  • If you use images, be sure to title them appropriately and provide descriptive ALT tags.
  • Try imagining your site without pictures or dynamic content. This will give you a good idea of what our crawler reads. If you lack imagination, you can try turning the images off in your web browser.
Finally, it's important to keep in mind that the AdSense for content ads on your site are automatically determined. Though it's not possible to choose the ads that are placed on your site, including more text-based content will help make it possible for our system to target your site correctly.

Inside AdSense: A picture isn't always worth a thousand words
